The Murder of Janell Balogun

Source: Baltimore County

Janell Balogun was only 33 years-old when she was found murdered on June 10th, 2012. It was shortly before 10:30 AM when a bicyclist spotted a woman lying in a wooded area of the Oella neighborhood in Catonsville, Maryland. Police were called to the scene, and it was quickly determined that the woman was deceased.

The deceased woman did not have any identification on her when her body was found. As such, fingerprints were used to determine that the woman was Janell Erlita Balogun - a mother of 3 from Baltimore County. Investigators also noted that Janell's body did not have any immediately obvious signs of trauma. However, an autopsy later determined that Janell's death was caused by trauma to the upper body. The case was labeled a homicide.

Janell's death has been inevitably devastating and baffling to her loved ones. Shortly after the news broke, Janell's sister told reporters that the area in which her body was found was "not an area that she would be in." It seems as if Janell's body was placed there in an attempt to conceal her death, as she was found lying behind a short wall adjacent to the road.

In that same report, a public appeal was made for anyone with information to come forward. A detective from the Baltimore County police stated, "we are reaching out to anyone in the Oella community who may have seen or heard anything unusual, and also anyone who has had contact with this victim who may be able to provide some insight into why she was killed."

Over a decade has passed, and Janell's murder remains unsolved. No persons of interest or suspects have been publicly announced, nor have there been any recent updates in the case. A monetary reward is being offered in exchange for information that could help solve Janell's case. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please contact Baltimore County Police at 410-887-3943 or submit a tip online.

The Murder of Tikeisha Nicole Cottingham

Source: Wicomico Sheriff's Office

Tikeisha 'Nicole' Cottingham was only 17 years-old when she was brutally murdered on March 20th, 2003. It was around 4:00 AM that morning when police were called to a residence on Nakomis Avenue in Wicomico County, Maryland about a suspected homicide. Upon their arrival, they found Tikeisha deceased on the living room floor. She had been stabbed several times.

Over two decades have passed, and Tikeisha's murder is still unsolved. There is very little information available about the case; media reports about the murder have been minimal. Details about Tikeisha's life and the events surrounding her murder are unknown. As such, many questions remain - namely: who killed this teenage girl who still had her whole life ahead of her? And why?

As of today, those questions remain unanswered. Tikeisha's murder is considered a cold case. There is a potential monetary reward for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of Tikeisha's killer(s). If you have any information that could help the investigation, please contact the Wicomico Criminal Investigation Division at (410) 548-4898 or Crime Solvers at (410) 548-1776.

The Disappearance of Janiyah Thompson

Source: Facebook

Janiyah Thompson has been missing since April 25th, 2023. The then-18-year-old was last seen in Temple Hills, Maryland. Before vanishing, Janiyah told her brother she was headed off to take care of something. She never returned home, and her loved ones have never seen or heard from her again.

At the time of her disappearance, Janiyah was a student at Eastern Senior High School and a member of their ROTC program. There does not appear to be a lot of additional information about her life prior to her going missing; however, various reports describe Janiyah as a hardworking and responsible teenage girl. Due to this, Janiyah's disappearance came as a complete shock to her family members.

The day Janiyah vanished seemingly began as a typical day. She went to school that morning as usual. At some point before the school day ended, Janiyah messaged her older brother and said she was leaving early because she needed to go take care of something. She reportedly did not disclose what she needed to do, but her brother was initially not concerned due to Janiyah's intelligent and trustworthy nature.

By the time the next morning came, and Janiyah still had not returned home, her family began to worry. Several attempts were made to locate/reach Janiyah, but they ended unsuccessfully. As such, Janiyah's family contacted police to report her missing.

After she was reported missing, it was discovered that Janiyah was captured by surveillance cameras at Naylor Road Metro Station in Temple Hills shortly after leaving her school. At this time, it is unknown if she boarded a train or if she was seen with anyone at the station.

The sighting at the metro station is the last known trace of Janiyah before she vanished. Some reports about her disappearance state that authorities believe she might still be in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, but it is unknown why they might believe that. Janiyah did not have a history of running away prior to vanishing. According to her parents, it is incredibly out of character for her to stay out of touch.

The Prince George County Police Department is in charge of investigating Janiyah's disappearance. If you have any information that could lead to her whereabouts, please contact authorities at 301-352-1200.

The Murder of May Ann Atilano Siason

Source: Baltimore County Police

May Ann Atilano Siason was only 32 years-old when she was found murdered on February 9th, 2017. The young woman was killed inside her own Nottingham, Maryland home. May Ann's body was found around 5:00 PM after family members returned home and found her unresponsive. Her four-year-old daughter was found unharmed nearby.

Police were called, and May Ann was declared deceased on the scene. However, her exact cause of death was not immediately obvious. There were no signs that a shooting or stabbing had taken place. The only information that has been revealed is that May Ann had "suffered apparent trauma to her upper body." Her death was subsequently labeled as a homicide.

The area where May Ann lived is described in reports as a "quiet section of Nottingham." Neighbors were shocked to learn of May Ann's murder; many stated that May Ann and her family members normally kept to themselves. Police had never been called to the residence prior to the murder.

Shortly after the news about May Ann's death broke, police announced that they do not believe her murder was a random act of violence. It's believed that May Ann likely knew her killer. Still, several years have passed, and an arrest has yet to be made in the case.

There is a monetary reward available for anyone with information that may help solve May Ann's murder. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please contact the Metro Crimestoppers of Maryland at 1-866-7LOCKUP or submit a tip online.

The Murder of Marilyn Scott

The morning of February 7th, 2017 began as a normal morning for Marilyn Scott. The 28-year-old woke up, got ready for the day, and then exited her Bel Air, Maryland apartment to head to work. Marilyn was a staff sergeant for the Air National Guard, and she worked at their offices in New Castle, Delaware. It was an approximate 50-minute drive from her home in Maryland to her place of employment. Marilyn was used this commute; but on this particular morning, she never ended up making it to work.

Neighbors called police that morning after hearing at least four gunshots in the parking lot of Marilyn's apartment building. When police arrived on the scene, they found Marilyn slumped over in her Honda Accord. She had suffered several gunshot wounds, and it was immediately clear that she had been murdered.

Police noted that nothing appeared to be missing or stolen from Marilyn's car or apartment, so a robbery was quickly ruled out as a motive. It was immediately believed that she was targeted - but it was difficult to come up with a suspect. Marilyn's loved ones described her as a private person, so even those closest to her were unaware of who she was interacting with prior to her murder. In fact, Marilyn was actually three months pregnant at the time of her death, but her family members did not know about the pregnancy until after she was killed.

Investigators have revealed very little about the investigation into Marilyn's murder, However, an article from 2018 states that detectives "narrowed down their search on who they think killed her. But they don't have enough to link who they think did it the morning of the crime." Investigators have not publicly named this person. However, Marilyn's sister Paris Scott stated that it's possibly the father of Marilyn's unborn child. Paris is quoted in the same article saying, "My sister was pregnant when she was murdered and the number one suspect matches that DNA."

Years have passed since that report, but an arrest has still not been made in Marilyn's case. As of today, her case remains unsolved. Detectives are still hoping to find that key piece of evidence that will allow them to finally move forward with the case. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please submit a tip to Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7-LOCKUP.

The Disappearance and Murder of Phylicia Barnes

Phylicia Barnes disappeared at the age of 16 on December 28th, 2010. The young girl vanished while visiting her half-sister in Baltimore, Maryland. Phylicia is originally from Monroe, North Carolina. Prior to her disappearance, Phylicia was a straight-A student on track to graduate early. She had dreams of getting a degree and becoming a teacher. Unfortunately, Phylicia's life was cut short before her dreams could come to fruition.

During the months leading up to her disappearance, Phylicia had grown closer to her half-sister, Deena Barnes. Phylicia and Deena were fathered by the same man but were raised separately by their respective mothers. The two sisters eventually connected on Facebook and began to get to know each other. Although Deena was 12 years older, the two began to form a strong bond.

Phylicia also began to get to know Deena's boyfriend, Michael Johnson. Deena and Michael had been together for almost ten years by the time Phylicia entered the picture. Michael would refer to Phylicia as his "lil sis", but Phylicia reportedly had feelings for him. According to report from True Crime Daily, Phylicia had a "passing schoolgirl crush on Michael". Over a period of a few months, Phylicia and Michael exchanged around 1200 text messages. The contents of the messages were reportedly not inappropriate, but the number of messages between the two seemed odd given the circumstances.

During December 2010, Phylicia traveled from North Carolina to Baltimore to visit Deena. While there, Deena provided Phylicia with alcohol and taught her how to play drinking gamesincluding games that involved nudity. Around the same time period, Deena's relationship with Michael had fallen apart and the two had broken up. On the day Phylicia vanished, Michael stopped by Deena's apartment to pick up some of his items. Deena was at work when Michael arrived at the apartment. Phylicia, who originally planned to go work with Deena that day, had decided to stay home and sleep in. She told Deena that she would walk to a store at Reistertown Road Plaza at some point during the day. Phylicia was reportedly last seen walking towards the shopping center. She never returned and was never seen or heard from again.

Michael was last known person to see Phylicia alive. Police inevitably questioned both him and Deena, but neither were immediately named as suspects. Then, on April 20th, 2011, human remains were found floating in the Susquehanna River. Dental records confirmed that the remains belonged to Phylicia Barnes. It is believed that she died from asphyxiation.

Over a year later, on April 25th, 2012, Michael Johnson was arrested in connection with Phylicia's murder. Two days later, investigators stated that they believed Michael killed Phylicia inside Deena's apartment and then transported her body in a 35-gallon tub. Neighbors reportedly had seen Michael carrying a tub matching that description on the day of Phylicia's disappearance. In fact, one witness even claimed to have helped Michael carry said tub.

After Michael's arrest, it appeared that Phylicia's case was one step closer to being solved and closed. Unfortunately, this would end up being untrue.

--

Michael maintained his innocence while awaiting trial. The prosecution's case was mostly circumstantial at this point, and Michael's defense attorneys argued that there was not enough physical evidence to prove guilt. Michael's attorneys backed Michael's claim that he was only at the apartment on the day Phylicia disappeared because he wanted to gather his personal belongings. The attorneys also claimed that Michael was in a new relationship following his breakup with Deena and had moved on.

An overturned verdict.

When Michael finally went to trial, both Deena and her sister testified that Michael provided Phylicia with alcohol and then made sexual advances on her. A neighbor testified that he had seen Michael carrying the tub out of the apartment on the day of Phylicia's disappearance. There was no physical evidence to support Deena's or her sister's testimony. There was also room for reasonable doubt as it was possible that the tub simply carried Michael's personal belongings. There was no physical evidence linking Phylicia to the tub.

However, there was one witness who caught the juror's attention: James McCray. McCray testified that he saw the body of Phylicia Barnes inside Deena's apartment on the day she went missing. He said that Michael confessed that he had suffocated Phylicia with a pillow, and he needed help disposing of her body. Following this testimony, the jury found Michael guilty of second-degree murder.

In an unusual turn of events, the verdict did not end up sticking. Prior to Michael's sentencing, prosecutors from a neighboring county informed the Baltimore prosecutors that James McCray was an unreliable witness. McCray reportedly had a habit of making false statements about various criminal cases. Upon this discovery, the judge overturned Michael's conviction and ordered a retrial.

Video evidence.

Prosecutors planned to introduce other evidence to establish Michael's motive in the new trial. While gathering evidence, it was discovered that there was a video tape that involved sexual content between Phylicia and several adults. The video reportedly portrayed Phylicia, Michael, Deena, and Michael's brother. In the footage, the four of them are visibly intoxicated and engaged in sexual activity.

Prosecutors were hopeful that this video was the evidence they needed to help convict Michael. Unfortunately, the jury never got to weigh in. On January 20th, 2015, the judge declared a mistrial and then ultimately dropped all the charges against Michael. Due to the unusual circumstances, the prosecution was granted a third trial.

A third acquittal.

Michael's third trial began in January 2018. This time, yet another judge declared a mistrial. After listening to the prosecution's case, the judge felt that they failed to provide enough evidence or establish a strong enough motive. Michael Johnson was yet again acquitted of all charges.

After his third acquittal, filed a lawsuit against one of the homicide detectives working Phylicia's case. He reportedly sued for $750,000.

Phylicia's impact.

Phylicia's case inspired increased advocacy for missing children in Maryland. In 2012, a bill called Phylicia's Law was passed by Maryland's General Assembly. The bill requires the state of Maryland "to publish a list of missing children along with statistics, and a list of volunteers who can aid law enforcement in the search for missing children."

An unsolved murder.

As of present day, the murder of Phylicia Barnes is considered unsolved. There is still a widespread belief that Michael Johnson is responsible for Phylicia's death, but this has never been proven. Her case remains open, but it is unclear if any other persons of interest have been identified.

The Disappearance of Crystal Fry

Crystal Fry (31) has been missing since late 2020. Before vanishing, the young mother was living in Baltimore, Maryland with her boyfriend/father of her two youngest children. Crystal's family members have not heard from her since November 11th, 2020.

That day, Crystal called her mother, Teresa Silverman, and told her that the previous three days had been the worst of her life. She explained that somebody had broken into her home by kicking in the front door, so she was staying with the father of her oldest child until it could be fixed. Crystal also told Teresa that she was scared for her life. The two then made plans to meet up the following day so they could talk more about the break-in. Crystal never showed up as planned, and her family has not heard from her again.

Certain reports state that Crystal was last seen on December 12th, 2020. It's unclear if this was the day she was reported missing, or if she was actually seen on this day. Either way, Crystal's family members have grown very concerned about her safety, especially after she did not show up for any holiday celebrations. It is extremely out of character for Crystal to abandon her daughters and her family members do not believe she would voluntarily stay out of touch with them.

There have been very few reports about in Crystal's disappearance. Very little is known about the alleged break-in at Crystal's home. Her mother has hired a private investigator to assist in the search. Anyone with information that could lead to Crystal's whereabouts is encouraged to come forward. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please call 410-396-2221.

The Disappearance of Kathy Pereira

Kathy Pereira was last seen by her loved ones on August 16th, 2015. The young girl was only 15 years-old at the time of her disappearance. Kathy had spent the majority of that summer in Portugal visiting her grandparents. She had recently returned to her hometown of Gaithersburg, Maryland shortly before she vanished.

On the day of her disappearance, Kathy and her family members took a trip to Virginia Beach. Her family members said that their trip to the beach was enjoyable, and nothing seemed unusual about Kathy that day. When they returned from the beach that evening, Kathy and her family members watched movies together before going to bed. When they awoke the following morning, Kathy was gone. She has never been seen or heard from again.

After noticing that Kathy was not at home, her family members spent the day driving around looking for her. They reached out to her friends and checked her social media pages, but nobody appeared to have any information about her whereabouts. By the evening of August 17th, Kathy's family contacted police to report her missing.

Investigators have classified Kathy as a runaway. Despite this, her family members are unsure of why she would leave and never return. According to her mother, Kathy was discussing her future plans the evening before her disappearance. Her mother explained, "we came back from the beach and [Kathy] was talking about all these goals, about going to college and what she wanted to study. She wanted to study Business and get her Masters in Portugal."

Based on these conversations, Kathy's family members did not have any reason to believe that she was planning to run away. However, Kathy's loved ones believe that somebody out there knows what happened to her, and they are hoping that person will come forward.

Certain initial reports state that Kathy might have been accompanied by a teenage boy at the time of her disappearance. Now that several years have passed, it is unclear if investigators still believe this to be true. There are unfortunately very few other details available about Kathy's case, and she remains missing today.

If you have any information that could lead to Kathy's whereabouts, please go here to submit an anonymous tip.

The Murder of Damaris Reyes Rivas

Damaris Reyes Rivas (pictured left) was only 15 years-old when she was brutally murdered by a group of MS-13 gang members on January 8th, 2017Venus Romero Iraheta (pictured right) was one of the 10 gang members who participated in the attack. She was only 17 years-old at the time. Damaris lived in Gaithersburg, Maryland prior to her death, however she was killed in Springfield, Virginia.
Damaris’ murder is believed to be motivated by the December 2016 murder of 21-year-old Christian Sosa Rivas. Christian was Venus’ boyfriend, and he referred to himself as the leader of his MS-13 clique, known as the Harrison Clique. At some point before his death, Christian reportedly angered members of two other MS-13 cliques: the Coronados and the Via Satellites.
It is believed that the leaders of those cliques were angry about Christian falsely claiming his title as a gang leader. On the day of Christian’s murder, Damaris allegedly texted him and asked him to meet her at a park in Dumfries, Virginia. Damaris herself was actually not at the park, though. Instead, a group of gang members from the other cliques met Christian there and proceeded to attack him.
On the day Damaris was murdered, she was asked to meet Venus and the others at Lake Accotink Park in Springfield. Damaris thought they were meeting to smoke marijuana, but when she showed up, she was ambushed by the group of gang members from Christian’s clique, all ranging from ages 15 to 21.
A series of cell phone videos revealed that they tortured and interrogated Damaris for several minutes. One video shows Damaris being forced to stand naked in the 21-degree weather, while another video shows Damaris laying in a pile of leaves in her own blood.
Venus was the main assailant in the attack. She admitted to investigators that she said “see you in fucking hell” before she stabbed Damaris 13 times. Damaris was then left to die; she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries around 20 minutes later.
Other MS-13 gang members went back to the park to retrieve her body, and they eventually dumped her in a puddle near an industrial park. Damaris’ body was found about a month later.
All of the 10 people involved in Damaris’ murder have been convicted. Venus was most recently sentenced; she received 40 years in prison. She offered an apology at her sentencing, stating, “I know I made the biggest mistake of my life. I am sorry.”

The Disappearance of Garnell Moore

Garnell Moore was only 7 years-old when he vanished some time during August of 2002. Throughout Garnell’s entire life up until his disappearance, he bounced from relative to relative and never seemed to have a stable home. He was never raised by his biological parents—his mother had been in prison since his birth, and his father lived a transient lifestyle. Garnell spent his early years living with his paternal grandparents in Baltimore, Maryland. Then, when Garnell was 6 years-old, his paternal aunt Belinda Cash took him into her home located in a nearby Baltimore neighborhood. This living arrangement was very informal, as Belinda never sought legal custody of Garnell.

Garnell was last seen by one of his great aunts, Trina Morton, while he was playing in Belinda’s front yard during August 2002. Trina was 9 months pregnant at the time. She arranged with Belinda to have Garnell come visit her the following weekend, but she went into labor and had to reschedule. When Trina tried to reschedule the following week, Belinda told her that it was an “inconvenient time” because she was in the process of moving to a new home. Garnell was never seen by any of his other relatives again after that.

For unclear reasons, none of Garnell’s relatives noticed that he was missing until June of 2005; nearly 3 years after he was last seen. When they confronted Belinda about his whereabouts, she initially told them that he was on a school field trip to Virginia. However, Garnell was not enrolled in school—nor had he ever been in his life. Due to this, Garnell did not have any teachers or classmates who might’ve noticed his disappearance earlier. He also never had any contact with social services.

After learning that Belinda’s claim about Garnell being on a school trip was false, Garnell’s relatives called the police. When the police interviewed Belinda, she told them that she had no longer wanted to care for Garnell and so left him on the steps of a social services building in the 500 block of north Hilton Street near Edmondson Avenue in West Baltimore. The police attempted to locate this social services building, but quickly learned that the address Belinda had given them was completely fake. The house that Belinda lived in during 2002 was searched, but no trace of Garnell was found. Investigators found it suspicious that Belinda had lied to them, but she had no criminal record or history of child abuse, and they could not find any concrete evidence that she had harmed Garnell.

The overall details on Garnell’s disappearance still remain unclear today. Various sources say that police do not necessarily believe that the child had been harmed. Unfortunately, the above picture on the left appears to be the only actual picture of Garnell out there. The picture on the right may reflect what Garnell looks like today. If you think you have seen him, or if you have any other information that may help this case, please contact the Baltimore Police Department at 443-984-7385.

The Murder of Kanika Powell

“I just wanted to share with you the scariest thing that happened to me this weekend. Saturday evening around 7pm a man was knocking at my door (as all of you may know I live alone). I asked who it was and he didn’t answer, so once I got close to the door and looked out of the peephole I saw a male figure that was not familiar to me at all. I asked who he was and all he stated was that he was from the FBI and that he was looking for Kanika Powell. It freaked me out completely because this man knew my name. He held a shield up but no picture ID and he never gave his name. He told me he was looking for me in regards to an investigation. I told him that I had no idea as to what he was talking about and that he would need to show me documentation as well as a warrant of some sort. So he left and I looked out my bedroom window and saw him walking. I also heard a voice tell him to walk in the opposite direction. The whole situation was scary and seemed so false. So because of this incident not only did I get NO sleep for the rest of the weekend but I am now trying to get an alarm system installed in my apartment. I had one in my old apartment, but I just hadn’t had it transferred over to my new one.

As far as everything that happened with the guy. I did call the FBI and they told me that it was more than likely bogus because they never come to your door by themselves and they always leave a card of some sort so that you can contact them. I called the local police as well to give them a description just in case someone is out there trying to rape or harm single women. Pass this on ladies.. This is not a fake Forward this happened to ME Kanika…Who knows who these guys are and what they are doing and in what areas other than mine.”

28 year-old Kanika Powell forwarded this message to her family members and friends following this frightening incident that occurred at her Laurel, Maryland apartment on August 23rd, 2008. By all accounts, it appeared that Kanika did everything right in this situation: she refused to answer the door without seeing the proper credentials, she called the police, and she warned others about a potentially dangerous person lurking around the area. Unfortunately, just five days later, Kanika received another mysterious knock on her door. When she looked through the peephole, she noticed it was not the same man who had come by days earlier, but his motives seemed just as suspicious. He told Kanika he was there to deliver a package, and Kanika once again refused to open the door. The man left after that, but he did not leave the package or any other sort of note about where it could be claimed.

This incident obviously frightened Kanika, but she decided to still go about her day and run her errands as planned. Five hours later, Kanika returned to her apartment after buying groceries. As she was retrieving her keys to unlock her front door, an unknown assailant emerged in the hallway and shot Kanika multiple times. She died the following day at a nearby hospital.

Police immediately suspected that Kanika was targeted, and that her death was not random. However, they are unable to figure out why she was killed. Kanika worked a high-security job, but investigators are unable to find any evidence that her work had anything to do with her death. Additionally, Kanika’s family members stated that Kanika did not have any enemies or scorned ex-lovers. Over a decade has passed since Kanika’s death, and despite the abundance of evidence, there have been no arrests in her case. Her case is still being investigated and this is a cash reward for being offered for anybody with information that could lead to an arrest. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please contact the (301) 498-0092.

The Murder of Karlyn Ramirez

source: Investigation Discovery

Karlyn Ramirez (24) was murdered by her estranged husband, Maliek Kearney (then 37) on August 24th, 2015. Both Karlyn and Maliek were soldiers in the US Army, and they had a four-month-old daughter together. At the time of Karlyn’s death, she and Maliek were stationed at two different places. Karlyn was stationed at Fort Meade and lived in Severn, Maryland. Maliek was stationed in Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Karlyn and Maliek had a very rocky relationship, even though they had only been married for five weeks. Prior to her death, Karlyn told Maliek she wanted a divorce. Maliek was angry at Karlyn’s request for divorce, even though he was already having an affair with Dolores Delgado (then 33).

Dolores Delgado. (source: CBS News)

Dolores was also a member of the US Army. She had met Maliek while serving back in 2007. The two also had a tumultuous relationship. At some point, Maliek confided in Dolores about his plans for Karlyn. He allegedly told Dolores that he was going to kill Karlyn unless Karlyn ended up reconciling with him. Together, Maliek and Dolores began to put this plan in motion.

On the day of Karlyn’s death, Dolores gave Maliek a gun and allowed him to borrow her car to drive to Karlyn’s home. She also agreed to lie to investigators by telling them that Maliek was with her at the time Karlyn was killed.

Dolores claimed that she thought Maliek and Karlyn would actually end up reconciling, but instead Maliek did what he originally planned to do and shot Karlyn multiple times. Karlyn’s body was found by the police the next day, with their four-month-old baby laying in her arms. The baby was fortunately not harmed.

In the months following Karlyn’s death, Maliek allegedly cozied up to Karlyn’s family as he played the role of the grieving widower. Dolores was quite uncomfortable with this, and she had allegedly grown fearful of Maliek after he committed the murder. Still, the two continued to have a sexual relationship.

In fact, their relationship continued up until they were finally arrested in October 2016. It took investigators over a year to gather enough evidence to charged not only Maliek for Karlyn’s murder, but Dolores for being an accomplice to the murder as well.

On August 8th, 2017, Dolores pleaded guilty to being an accomplice in Karlyn’s murder. She was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Dolores also agreed to testify against Maliek at his trial. During Dolores' testimony, she once again confessed to providing Maliek with a gun, car, and alibi while he murdered his wife. She also admitted to giving Maliek extra gas cans so he would not have to stop at a gas station during his road trip to Karlyn's residence.

On August 9th, 2018, the jury found Maliek guilty of crossing state lines to commit domestic violence resulting in the death of Karlyn Ramirez. He was sentenced to life in prison.

The Murder of Christine Sheddy

Christine Sheddy was murdered at the age of 26 on November 12th, 2007. Prior to her death, the mother-of-three was living in a farmhouse in Pocomoke City, Maryland. There were three other people living in the house as well: 33 year-old Clarence Butch...

Christine Sheddy was murdered at the age of 26 on November 12th, 2007. Prior to her death, the mother-of-three was living in a farmhouse in Pocomoke City, Maryland. There were three other people living in the house as well: 33 year-old Clarence Butch Jackson (pictured top right), Clarence’s girlfriend, 27 year-old Tia Lynn Johnson (pictured middle right), and Clarence’s cousin, 17 year-old Justin Hadel.

On the day of the murder, Christine was at the house with Clarence and Justin. Although Clarence was Tia’s boyfriend, he was also involved in a sexual relationship with Christine. Christine, however, wanted more from that relationship. When she told Clarence this, he ultimately turned her down. As a result, Christine threatened to tell Tia that Clarence had been cheating with her. Justin overheard this, and said to Clarence, “you better finish her off.” Justin himself then picked up a 2-by-4 piece of lumber and hit Christine in the head. The impact crushed her face and broke every bone below her forehead. She was ultimately hit 3 times in the head before she succumbed to her injuries.

Tia was not at the house at the time the murder occurred. When she did return home, she saw Clarence and Justin emerging from the woods. They told her that Christine had run off, when in reality Clarence and Justin had just buried her in a shallow grave. Clarence and Justin later admitted to what really happened, and they asked Tia to help them move her body. The trio then placed Christine’s body in the trunk of Tia’s car. With Tia’s two small children in the car, Tia, Clarence and Justin drove to Snow Hill. There, they ended up burying Christine’s body behind a guest house at the River House Inn.

Later, Clarence and Tia moved to Tennessee, while Justin moved to Texas. In February 2010, Clarence was arrested in Hamilton County on arson charges. While behind bars, he reached out to Christine’s mother and told her that he would give up the location of Christine’s body in exchange for him being transferred to a Maryland prison, so he could be closer to his daughter. Detectives then went to go speak with Clarence, and he ultimately admitted that, while Justin killed Christine, he was the “ringleader” behind the murder and the cover-up. Clarence also told detectives where they could find Christine’s remains. They were located about two days later. Then, Clarence, Tia and Justin were all charged for their respective involvement in Christine’s murder.

In October 2012, Tia was sentenced to 15 years. Clarence was sentenced to life in prison with a 30 year suspension. The previous year, Justin was convicted of first-degree murder as well, however in 2015 he appealed the case on a technicality and was granted a retrial. During the original trial, Justin requested a new lawyer, but the Judge did not allow it. Although he was granted the new trial, Justin ultimately ended up pleading guilty to first-degree murder. He also received a life sentence with a 30 year suspension.

The Suspicious Death of Annie McCann

Related image

Annie McCann was only 16 years-old when she was found deceased under suspicious circumstances on November 2nd, 2008. The teen lived in Fairfax, Virginia at the time, and she was last seen by her family on either the evening of October 30th, 2008, or on the morning of October 31st, 2008.

The 31st was a Friday, and according to Annie's father Daniel McCann, it began as a typical day. Before he left for work that morning, he peeked into Annie's room and saw what he thought was the shape of her body under the covers. Thinking that Annie would wake up shortly thereafter and get herself to school, Annie's father left for work.

Annie's mother Mary Jane McCann was out of town that day, however she still expected a phone call from Annie once Annie returned home from school. When that phone call never came, she called her husband to ask if he had heard from their daughter. Daniel immediately left work to see if Annie had made it home from school. When he arrived, he learned that Annie had never gone to school at all that day - as her school had left a voicemail notifying her family of her absence.

Later, Annie's parents found a note from Annie that she had left behind--it stated that she was depressed and had been contemplating suicide, but instead she decided to just run away and start fresh. After finding the note, Annie's parents realized that Annie took $1000 in cash, clothing, some snacks, and their family's white Volvo that she usually drove to school. Upon this discovery, Annie's parents immediately reported her missing.

Just days later, on November 2nd, 2008, police in Baltimore, Maryland were notified about a body that was found behind a dumpster near the Perkins Homes Housing Project. It did not take authorities very long to identify the body as that of Annie McCann. Her backpack was found near her body, which contained her driver's license and school identification. The white Volvo she was driving was found abandoned at a nearby gas station.

The car was checked for fingerprints, and a print matching a local Baltimore teen named Darnell Kinlaw was found.

Police questioned Darnell, who told them that he and a group of friends happened to come across Annie's unlocked car in Baltimore. Darnell stated that they noticed Annie in the backseat - presumably dead - so they dumped her body behind the dumpster near the Perkins Home before taking the car for a "joyride."

While this story seemed suspicious, police did not charge Darnell or his friends with anything related to Annie's case. In fact, authorities were quick to announce that they did not believe foul play was involved in Annie's death. An autopsy determined that Annie had a significant amount of lidocaine in her system at the time of her death. A bottle of Bactine was found in the backseat of Annie's car, and her DNA was found at the lip of the bottle. A medical examiner determined that Annie died of lidocaine poisoning. The cause of death was a ruled a suicide.

Annie's parents were not satisfied with the investigation's findings. They did not believe that Annie took her own life, nor did they believe she voluntarily ingested Bactine. The McCanns decided to launch an investigation of their own, during which evidence was discovered that suggested Annie's death might have not been a suicide after all.

Revisiting autopsy photographs.

After looking at autopsy photographs, Annie's parents noticed that Annie had a large bruise on her forehead that the police officers seemingly dismissed. Additionally, they believe they saw a cigarette burn on Annie's face and signs of sexual assault on her body.

All in all, the McCanns stated that there were over 20 wounds to Annie's body that were not documented on the actual autopsy report. A 2018 letter written to Maryland Governor Larry Hogan states that Annie also suffered blunt force trauma and cervical spine wounds.

Questions about Lidocaine poisoning.

Annie's parents also questioned the company that makes the Bactine found in Annie's car--and they were told that the amount of lidocaine found in that product is not enough to be lethal.

A well-known medical examiner, Dr. Michael Baden backed this finding as well. According to a 2016 report, Dr. Baden and the Bactine company both stated that "drinking one bottle [of Bactine] would never be fatal."

A potential sighting.

The McCanns eventually hired a private investigator, who was able to track down a woman who claimed to have seen Annie in Baltimore prior to her death. The woman was an employee at a coffee shop, and she said that she saw Annie at the shop with an "older, disheveled looking" woman.

Police have never been able to locate said woman.

Continued suspicions about Darnell Kinlaw.

It is unclear if the McCanns believe the coffee shop sighting of Annie to be credible, as they have always had their suspicions about Darnell Kinlaw. Those suspicions only intensified three years after Annie's death, when Darnell was arrested for shooting his girlfriend to death and stealing her car.

There were obvious similarities between this case and Annie's case, however police still insisted that Darnell was not involved in Annie's death.

Where the case stands.

Despite all of these findings, Baltimore police have still maintained that Annie's death was a suicide. Some reports state that the case is close, while others claim it's still pending. Public opinion appears to be somewhat divided on what people believe happened to Annie. Many believe Annie was, in fact, a victim of both foul play and inadequate investigating by the Baltimore police. Others seem to believe she did, in fact, take her own life.

The McCanns are still adamantly working to prove that foul play was involved in their daughter's death.

The Disappearance of Christian Muse

Christian Muse disappeared at the age of 19 on July 15th, 2012. He was last seen in the Glass Manor area of Oxon Hill, Maryland. Christian never returned home, and he has never been seen or heard from again.

Christian’s family does not believe that he left on his own accord. Shortly before his disappearance, Christian had finished courses to begin working as a HVAC technician. It appeared that Christian was building towards his future, however according to his father Michael Muse, Christian was experimenting with drugs as well. Due to this, Michael initially believed his son might have been suffering from memory loss. He explained, “just like a lot of teenagers he was experimenting with drugs and to what degree I don’t know. I know sometimes depending on the situation or the type of drug this could happen.”

As time passed, Michael’s theory seemed less and less likely. Then, 9 months after Christian’s disappearance, Michael was contacted by a DC Police detective who was investigating a separate case that might be linked to Christian.

In a time before Christian vanished, he was reportedly exploited by a group of adults who ran a child trafficking ring. This means that Christian likely had information about said adults that could incriminate them. Michael told reporters, “a DC detective who said he was working in conjunction with the FBI was questioning me, trying to find Christian and another group of boys to use as witnesses to solidify their case against these adults , and what’s strange and scary is that he couldn’t find any of these boys.” After this point, Christian’s family began to believe that something sinister happened to him.

Despite these suspicious circumstances, Christian’s disappearance did not receive any media attention until summer 2013, over a year after he vanished. Christian’s family is still holding out hope that he will one day return home. Michael has opened up a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising reward money for anybody with information that could bring Christian home. If you are interested in donating, please visit the page here. Additionally, if you have any information that could lead to Christian’s whereabouts, please contact Prince George’s County Crime Stoppers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).

The Murder of Jacquelyn Smith

Jacquelyn Smith was brutally murdered on the evening of December 1st, 2018. The 54 year-old woman went out that night to an American Legion club in Baltimore, Maryland. She was accompanied by her husband, 52 year-old Keith Smith, and her stepdaughter, 28 year-old Valeria ‘Shavon’ Smith. The group was out that night to celebrate Shavon’s 28th birthday. On their way home that evening, Keith told police that they saw a woman holding a sign that said “please help feed me and my baby.” By Keith’s account, Jacquelyn rolled down her window to give the woman some money, but as she did so, another man approached the car and reached for Jacquelyn’s wallet. Keith told police that a struggle between Jacquelyn and the man ensued, that resulted in Jacquelyn being stabbed in the torso. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

Keith told police that the man who stabbed Jacquelyn fled the scene before he could be caught. Police were initially looking for this man, however throughout their investigation, they realized that this man actually did not exist at all. At this point, police shifted their investigation to the last known people to have seen Jacquelyn before she was stabbed: her husband Keith, and her stepdaughter, Shavon.

In late February 2019, investigators received word that Keith and Shavon were planning to cross the border into Mexico. Before they were able to leave the country, authorities tracked them down in Texas. Keith and Shavon were subsequently arrested on March 3rd, 2019. At that time, both were arresting and charged with murdering Jacquelyn. Very little information about a motive was revealed, and the case is still pending.

In June 2019, it was announced that the murder charges against Shavon were dropped. Instead, prosecutors pursued charges for accessory to murder after-the-fact . In September 2019, Shavon pleaded guilty to the charges. Keith is still maintaining his not guilty plea for the murder charges and is expected to go to trial in 2020.

The Disappearance and Death of Brittany Peart

During the early morning hours of July 25th, 2008, Brittany Peart was not in her best state-of-mind. The 21 year-old woman was in the midst of a disagreement with her mother that left her quite upset. By time it reached 1 o’clock in the morning, Brittany angrily decided to leave. She packed an overnight bag with a few belongings and drove away from her family’s Elkton, Maryland home. Brittany’s mother assumed that Brittany just needed time to cool off. However, Brittany never returned home.

A week later, Brittany’s car was found abandoned in the town of North East, Maryland. Both her keys and the bag she packed before leaving her house were found inside the car. Brittany had not been reported missing yet at this point, and it is unclear if her family members were notified about the discovery of her car. If they were, it appeared they were still leaning towards the idea that Brittany was just taking some time away and would eventually return on her own accord. When she had still not returned by September 2008, Brittany’s family members reported her missing.

In October 2009, Brittany’s family members hired a private investigator to help search for her. It is unknown how in-depth the investigation was, but the private investigator ended up telling her family that Brittany had likely started a new life in another city. The search for Brittany seemed to hit a lull after that.

Over two years later, on December 4th, 2011, human remains were found by hunters in a wooded area on the Maryland-Delaware state line. Days later, those remains were identified as that of Brittany Peart. After the identification, very few details about Brittany’s death were released. Details about her exact cause of death remain unclear to this day, but Brittany’s loved ones believe she was murdered. In fact, many of Brittany’s friends have posted on social media that they believe she was killed by a man she was dating at the time. This man has never been charged with anything related to Brittany’s death, and it is unclear if investigators believe Brittany was murdered.

The truth about what happened to Brittany Peart remains a mystery to this day. Delaware State Police have classified her death as a cold case. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please contact Delaware Cold Case detectives at (302) 741-2730.
