The Murder of Tikeisha Nicole Cottingham

Source: Wicomico Sheriff's Office

Tikeisha 'Nicole' Cottingham was only 17 years-old when she was brutally murdered on March 20th, 2003. It was around 4:00 AM that morning when police were called to a residence on Nakomis Avenue in Wicomico County, Maryland about a suspected homicide. Upon their arrival, they found Tikeisha deceased on the living room floor. She had been stabbed several times.

Over two decades have passed, and Tikeisha's murder is still unsolved. There is very little information available about the case; media reports about the murder have been minimal. Details about Tikeisha's life and the events surrounding her murder are unknown. As such, many questions remain - namely: who killed this teenage girl who still had her whole life ahead of her? And why?

As of today, those questions remain unanswered. Tikeisha's murder is considered a cold case. There is a potential monetary reward for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of Tikeisha's killer(s). If you have any information that could help the investigation, please contact the Wicomico Criminal Investigation Division at (410) 548-4898 or Crime Solvers at (410) 548-1776.

The Disappearance and Murder of Heaven LaShae Ross

Source: AL.com

Heaven LaShae Ross disappeared in Northport, Alabama on August 19th, 2003. The 11-year-old girl left her family's residence that morning to walk to her school bus stop. The young girl, known by her loved ones as Shae, never made it to her destination.

It did not take long for Shae's family to notice she had vanished. It began pouring rain a few short minutes after she left the house. According to reports, Shae's stepfather Kevin Thompson subsequently decided to drive Shae and her older sister, Alex - who was already at the bus stop - to school instead. When Kevin drove up to the bus stop, he found Alex there alone. Shae had not shown up and was nowhere in sight.

The bus stop is located approximately 50 yards from the family's residence at the Willowbrook Mobile Home Park off of Hunter's Creek Road. Shae left the home that morning at 6:55 AM to make that short walk. The storm erupted a few minutes later; it was 7:01 AM when Kevin went to pick the girls up from the bus stop. Shae seemingly vanished during a 50-yard walk in a span of just 6 minutes.

Shae's mother and stepfather contacted police very shortly after discovering she was missing. Police spoke to various residents at the mobile home park and learned that a few neighbors had seen Shae walking by herself towards the bus stop that morning. No one reported seeing her with anyone, nor did anyone report seeing her get into a vehicle. As such, Shae's disappearance did not meet the criteria for an Amber Alert to be issued.

When Shae had not returned by the time school let out that day, the full-scale investigation was finally launched. Over the next several weeks, authorities from both local police and the FBI were involved in the search. Volunteer searches were also conducted. Flyers were passed out and reward money was offered. Unfortunately, none of these efforts led to Shae's whereabouts.

Neighbors, family members, friends, and various persons of interest were interviewed - but nobody was able to account for Shae's whereabouts. As weeks turned into months without any sign of Shae, her case grew cold. Over three years passed without any sign of the young girl.

Then, on December 19th, 2006, a daunting discovery was made at an abandoned house off Crescent Ridge Road near Holt. A man was collecting cans near the house when his dog ran into the house's crawlspace. The man followed his dog and noticed that, inside the crawlspace, there was a bright pink shirt with the Bratz Doll logo, a pair of leggings, and what appeared to be human skeletal remains.

When police arrived on the scene, they noticed that the clothing in the crawlspace was the same clothing that Shae was wearing when she left her house on the morning of her disappearance. As such, it was immediately suspected that the remains belonged to Shae. Forensic testing confirmed this shortly thereafter.

Shae's remains were badly decomposed, making investigators unable to determine an exact cause of death. However, her manner of death was labeled as a homicide. Shae was found just 8 miles away from the mobile home park where she lived, in a location that is well known for illegal drug activity. The discovery of her body in that area has led to several questions that remain unanswered today - such as: Who killed Shae? How did she end up in that house?

A look into the circumstances surrounding Shae's disappearance has led to a few different theories.

-
The morning of Shae's disappearance.

The morning of Shae's disappearance began as a seemingly normal one. As previously noted, Shae left her family's home around 6:55 AM that morning to make the short walk to the bus stop.

Shae's older sister, Alex, was already at the bus stop at this time. Reports state it was normal for Alex to leave the house a few minutes ahead of Shae, but Shae always eventually caught up to her at the bus stop. It began to storm shortly before 7:00 AM, which prompted their stepfather, Kevin, to go pick up the girls from the bus stop so they would not have to wait for the bus in the rain.

Given that the family's residence was approximately just 50 yards away from the bus stop, it's reasonable to assume that Shae would have made it there by time Kevin had arrived to pick the girls up at 7:01 AM. According to Alex, though, Shae still had not shown up. It appeared she was not anywhere in the immediate area or along the route to the bus stop either.

When Shae's mother, Beth, learned that Shae was missing, she immediately called police. However, as noted above, Shae's disappearance did not meet the criteria for an Amber Alert.

Searching for Shae.

Source: CBS 42

Members of the local community came together in the early stages of Shae's disappearance to assist in the search. A command center was set up where volunteers met up to help with the investigative efforts. Resources were pulled from both the FBI and local investigators. Eventually, money was raised to offer a reward of up to $70,000 in exchange for information leading Shae's whereabouts.

Over the weeks, the relationship between some members of the command center and Shae's mother, Beth, and stepfather, Kevin, grew sour. At some point Beth accused certain volunteers of stealing $500 that had been donated by a local church. The volunteers adamantly denied any theft had occurred. In fact, the leader of the volunteer group said that all cash donations and checks that they received were handed directly to Beth.

The volunteers maintained that they wanted to find Shae, while they felt Shae's family members were not actively involved in the search. This led to speculation about Shae's family possibly being involved in her disappearance. Events that followed caused that speculation to grow even stronger.

A suspicious fire.

Approximately five weeks after Shae's disappearance, a fire broke out in her family's home. The fire was contained to Shae's bedroom; investigators concluded it had been an act of arson. According to Navigating Advocacy, "the fire marshal's report said that a small hole in the floor at the foot of the bed and at the foot of a recliner where a cigarette butt and trash was found is where the fire started."

Beth and Kevin told police that they had no idea how they fire was started; nor did they know about the hole in the floor. Kevin reportedly told police that he believed that "whoever took Shae may have felt the pressure looming and attempted to get rid of any potential evidence in her room by crawling under the trailer and setting the fire." However, police have been unable to confirm this theory.

By this point, there was already local speculation about Kevin possibly being involved in Shae's disappearance. This speculation was partially driven by an incident that happened three years earlier in which Kevin was charged with harassment during a domestic dispute. According to reports, Kevin grabbed Shae and threw her to the ground during the dispute.

Kevin and Beth both maintained that this was an isolated incident, and that Kevin and Shae had a great relationship. Still, many continued to believe Kevin was involved and that Beth may be covering for him. Eventually, though, both Kevin and Beth took polygraph exams, and both passed.

Another potential person of interest.

On September 18th, 2003 - about a month after Shae's disappearance - police questioned a 21-year-old man named Evin Ryland. Evin was a friend of Shae's older brother, Blake. He was no stranger to law enforcement; he had gotten in trouble in the past for harboring runaways.

When police went to Evin's residence to question him about Shae, they found that he was actually harboring two 16-year-old runaways at that time. However, there was no sign of Shae, nor was there any evidence that he had been involved in her disappearance. Evin was eventually cleared as a suspect.

A cold case disappearance.

While the community was very involved in the initial stages of the search for Shae, that involvement began to dwindle as weeks turned into months without any progress. The search efforts by professionals and members of the command center had ended unsuccessfully. By the 10-week mark, with no new leads to follow, the command center disbanded.

The investigation into Shae's disappearance grew cold. Shae's loved ones continued to hold vigils and keep hope alive for her return. Unfortunately, no clues were found until her remains were found by chance in December 2006.

December 19th, 2006: remains are found.

As previously stated, a man and his dog found skeletal remains in the crawlspace of an abandoned house off Crescent Ridge Road on December 19th, 2006. Reports state that the land around the house was overgrown, making the house not easily seen from the road. Locals stated that the house "wasn’t easily found unless you knew where you were going."

When police arrived on the scene, they spotted the Bratz doll t-shirt and a backpack near the skeletal remains. This immediately led to the belief that the remains were likely that of Shae Ross.

Once it was confirmed that the remains did, in fact, belong to Shae, the investigation shifted to a homicide case.

Remaining questions.

The discovery of Shae's body marked the end of a chapter for her loved ones and the community. There was no longer the question of "where is Shae?". Unfortunately, though, everyone was now left with a whole new set of questions, such as: How did Shae end up at that house? Who killed her? How did she die?

It's known that a thunderstorm caused heavy rain after Shae left her house to walk to the bus stop on the morning of her disappearance. Did Shae try to flee from the rain? Did an opportunist predator offer her a ride? No one in the neighborhood reported seeing her get into a vehicle that morning, but it does not appear that there is any sort of footage that confirms that she didn't - so it cannot be completely ruled out.

It's also possible someone - possibly a member of the mobile home park - offered her shelter from the rain inside their residence or other covered property. Did this person also kill Shae and hide her body at the abandoned house?

Source: AL.com

Many reports state that the abandoned house where Shae was found was a known spot amongst drug users in the area; it's often referred to by locals as a "drug house." This inevitably leads to the question of whether or not drugs were involved in Shae's disappearance and death. Did drugs play a role in a way? Or was she placed in that crawlspace to make it appear that the frequenters of that house were the ones responsible instead of the actual killer?

The house was not a part of the investigation into Shae's disappearance until her remains were found in the crawlspace - even though it's only 8 miles away from Shae's home. It appears investigators may not have gotten any tips that led them to the house, or anyone associated with the house, before her body was found.

 The family.

Kevin, Beth, and Alex in 2018. (Source: The Tuscaloosa News)

As common in many unsolved missing persons/murder cases, there is still speculation about the family - namely, her stepfather Kevin, being responsible for Shae's death. It's easy to see where this speculation comes from, especially since there is a documented incident of Kevin grabbing and throwing Shae to the floor when she was just 8 or 9 years old.

The fire in Shae's room five weeks after her disappearance also causes speculation about the family. If the fire was set to destroy evidence, that indicates that something happened to Shae inside her bedroom rather than during her walk to the bus stop. However, three neighbors reported seeing Shae walking to the bus stop that morning.

Kevin has never been charged with anything related to Shae's disappearance or murder, nor has he ever been publicly labeled as a suspect. Investigators have yet to publicly label any individual as a suspect at this time.

An unsolved case.

The Murder of Alkia Rodgers

source: wcnc.com

Alkia Rodgers was found brutally murdered at the age of 18 on May 22nd, 2003. The teen girl left her family's Charlotte, North Carolina home the previous evening to meet up with the father of her infant son at Southside Park. Alkia never returned home, and her family later reported her missing.

The following day, children playing on Southside Park's playground made a gruesome discovery at the top of the slide: the body of a teenage girl. That teenage girl was later identified as Alkia Rodgers. An autopsy later confirmed that Alkia's throat had been slit, and she had also been strangled.

Southside Park is located just 1,000 feet away from Alkia's residence. She often took her infant son to the park to play. The park was also established as a meet-up spot between Alkia and her son's father, as he would often bring "diapers, food, and other things" to the park for Alkia to bring back home to their child.

According to reports, Alkia planned to meet up with her son's father at the park that evening so he could give her diapers for their son. Due to this, her son's father immediately became a suspect after Alkia was found murdered at their meet-up spot. In 2019, cold case detective Ed Williams told reporters that Alkia's son's father was "questioned extensively, but nothing has ever been proven." Detective Williams maintained that he is still a suspect, but there are "lots of people" who are still suspects as well.

However, DNA that was collected from the scene reportedly does not match Alkia's son's father. At this time, it does not appear that detectives have made a match of the DNA to any person who has been investigated for Alkia's murder. It also does not appear that the DNA matches anyone in their database.

Despite this, investigators are confident that Alkia's murder was not random; that she likely knew her killer. Detective Williams specifically noted that the way in which Alkia was savagely killed indicates that her death was personal. He explained, "Usually when someone is strangled like that and cut in [the] throat, it's usually people that know each other."

Over two decades have passed, and Alkia's murder still remains unsolved. Both Alkia's family members and investigators hope that somebody with information about Alkia's murder will come forward. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please CMPD's Cold Case Unit at 704-336-2358.

Unsolved Murders: Jennifer Hammond & Christina White from Milton, New York

Jennifer Hammond (left), Christina White (right)

Jennifer Hammond (nicknamed 'Moonbeam' by her friends) vanished at the age of 18 on August 1st, 2003. Prior to her disappearance, Jennifer had a job selling magazines and she lived with her co-workers at a hotel in Albany, New York. On the day she vanished, Jennifer's co-workers dropped her off at the Creek & Pines mobile home park in Milton so she could sell magazine subscriptions door-to-door. When Jennifer's co-workers returned to the mobile home park later to pick her up, she was nowhere to be found. She never returned to the hotel in Albany and was never seen or heard from again.

Nearly two years later, another young woman disappeared from the Milton area. On June 30th, 2005, 19-year-old Christina White seemingly vanished without a trace. She was last seen by her mother at the home they shared at the Stockade mobile home park. The Stockade mobile community is located less than two miles from Creek & Pines, where Jennifer was last seen in 2003.

900 Rock City Road: Stockade Mobile Homes, where Christina lived. 855 Middleline Road: Creek & Pines, where Jennifer was last seen.

Nine months later, on March 10th, 2006, Christina's remains were found in the Daketown Forest in Greenfield. Forensics revealed that Christina had been stabbed multiple times. Due to the state of her body, it was believed that she had been killed shortly after her disappearance.

Christina's death was officially classified as a homicide and detectives continued to investigate it as such, however they had very few leads to chase. Meanwhile, Jennifer Hammond remained missing. Then, on October 26th, 2009, a hunter found a human skull on Lake Desolation Forest in Greenfield. The location where the skull was found is a little over three miles from the location where Christina's remains were found.

Forensic testing and dental records confirmed that the skull belong to Jennifer Hammond, who had vanished six years earlier in 2003. Her death was classified as a homicide. Investigators found it quite suspicious that two young women around the same age had vanished from the same area and had been found murdered in close proximity. From that point forward, detectives have announced that they believe Jennifer and Christina were killed by the same person(s).

In 2023, a 46-year-old man named Craig Nelson Ross Jr. was arrested and charged with kidnapping 9-year-old Charlotte Sena from a campground in Moreau Lake State Park. Fingerprints from a ransom note left behind by Ross led authorities to his mother's home in Milton. Charlotte was luckily found alive, hidden inside a cupboard at the home. Ross was subsequently arrested and charged with kidnapping.

Authorities are now investigating whether or not Ross played a role in the disappearances and murders and Jennifer and Christina. At this time, he has not been charged with anything related to their cases. However, the investigation is ongoing.

If you have any information that could help the investigation, please contact the Saratoga Springs Police Department at (518) 584-1800.

The Disappearance and Murder of Tyesha Bell

Tyesha Bell vanished at the age of 22 on May 10th, 2003. At the time of her disappearance, Tyesha lived in Aurora, Illinois, in an apartment that she shared with her sister. On the evening she vanished, Tyesha received a mysterious phone call that prompted her to leave the apartment. She never returned and was never seen or heard from again.

Tyesha's disappearance was quickly deemed suspicious by investigators. It appeared that Tyesha left home that evening with the intention of returning quickly. She left candles burning inside the apartment, and many of her personal belongings were left behind. Additionally, it was uncharacteristic of her to fall out-of-touch with her loved ones, especially her two young children. Investigators felt that foul play was responsible for Tyesha's disappearance very early on--but the case seemed to go cold quickly.

In 2004, it was reported that police had searched the home of a potential person of interest. However, no other information was released. After that, news about Tyesha's case was far and few in between.

Finally, in December 2020, human remains were found in a shallow grave in a wooded area of Kane County. Various clothing pieces and other items were also found in the area. Tyesha's loved ones were quickly able to identify the items as Tyesha's. Months later, DNA and dental records confirmed that remains also were that of Tyesha Bell.

Tyesha's exact cause of death still remains unclear, but police are now investigating her case as a murder. At this time, no arrests have been made. A tip line specifically for Tyesha's case has been set up by the Aurora Police Department. If you have any information that could lead to the arrest of Tyesha's killer, please call 630-256-5517.

The Disappearance of Laroya Bray

Laroya Bray was only 15 years old when she vanished on March 26th, 2003. At the time, the teen lived with her mother and her mother's fiancé in Los Angeles, California. Laroya was reportedly last seen standing outside the apartment building where they lived near Arlington Avenue and Adams Boulevard.

According to various reports, Laroya's mother was not home on the afternoon of Laroya's disappearance. In fact, it was reportedly Laroya's mother's fiancé who noticed that Laroya was missing. The fiancé called Laroya's mother around 5:30 PM to say that he could not find Laroya. A few hours passed, and Laroya was still nowhere to be found. When Laroya's mother finally returned home around 11:00 PM, she reported her daughter missing.

Once police began investigating, they quickly announced that they believed that Laroya left on her own accord. She was subsequently classified as a runaway. Ever since, there has been very little news or information available about Laroya's case

In the early stages of the investigation, it was announced that Laroya was seen shortly before her disappearance with a black man described as 5'8" tall with a medium build. However, this information was later proven to be false. It's unclear how investigators were able to determine that the reported sighting was false.

It's also unclear why investigators were so certain that Laroya left on her own accord. She remains at the runaway status today - despite the fact that over two decades have passed without any sign of her.

Laroya's disappearance remains unsolved. If you have any information that could lead to answers in her case, please go here to submit an anonymous tip.

The Disappearance of Elyssa Vasquez

Elyssa Vasquez was only 12 years-old when she vanished on January 28th, 2003. She was last seen at her middle school in Doraville, Georgia. Elyssa disappeared at some point during the school day and has never been seen or heard from again.

There are very few details available about Elyssa's case. It's unclear if anyone saw her leaving the school on the day of her disappearance. However, investigators classified Elyssa as a runaway. Her case remained at the runaway status for years before she was eventually reclassified as missing and endangered.

Due to the scarce details, it is unclear why investigators initially classified Elyssa as a runaway. The runaway classification suggests that there was some sort of sign that she left on her own accord--or that investigators simply did not have evidence that she was kidnapped. In addition to the lack of information about how Elyssa left her school, there is also a lack of information about whether or not she spoke to anyone about running away.

There are also very few details about the happenings in Elyssa's life prior to her disappearance. Posts on a Facebook page dedicated to spreading awareness about Elyssa's case, it appears her family believes that she is still out there somewhere. It's clear that they are still devastated about her disappearance, and they are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

If you have any information that could lead to Elyssa's whereabouts, please go here to submit an anonymous tip.

The Disappearance of Tabitha Tuders

Tabitha Tuders was only 13 years-old when she vanished on April 29th, 2003. She was last seen at her family’s Nashville, Tennessee home that morning around 7am, shortly after her father woke her up to get ready for school. Tabitha’s father left for work shortly after he woke her up–she was watching TV when he left and nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. Just like every other day, Tabitha planned to walk to her bus stop on 14th and Boscobel Street to board the school bus at 8am. A few witnesses saw her walking towards that direction before 8am, but unfortunately Tabitha never made it to the bus stop or to school that day. When she did not return home that afternoon as planned, her parents called the school only to find out that she had not attended her classes at all that day. Tabitha was then reported missing around 6pm that evening.

Due to Tabitha’s age, authorities initially treated her disappearance as a runaway. Her parents have never believed that she left on her own accord; she has no history of running away and she was a straight-A student who took pride in her perfect school attendance record. Additionally, Tabitha left behind all of her personal possessions and money. At this time investigators have changed their tune, and have stated that they now believe Tabitha was abducted.

At first, there appeared to be a lot of potential clues in Tabitha’s disappearance. A young boy told authorities that he saw Tabitha get into a green car with an African-American man the morning of her disappearance. The description of the man matches the description of Tabitha’s sister’s ex-boyfriend, however police have never been able to connect said man to Tabitha’s case. Additionally, the young boy’s story has never been confirmed, but search dogs traced Tabitha’s scent along a route similar to the one that boy described.

Another potential clue came from a piece of paper found in Tabitha’s bedroom. In Tabitha’s handwriting, the paper reads “T.D.T -N- M.T.L.” TDT are Tabitha’s initials, but it is unclear who the other initials belong to. Tabitha’s family stated that she did not have a significant other, and police could not find any evidence that she ran away to be with a romantic partner. Tabitha’s friends were interviewed and a computer she used was analyzed; neither provided any evidence that Tabitha was lured away by a predator.

Over the years, there have been numerous unconfirmed sightings of Tabitha in various places throughout the United States. A few young women that resembled Tabitha even submitted DNA samples that ultimately confirmed none of them were her. Despite this, Tabitha’s family still holds out hope that she is alive. The FBI is actively investigating her disappearance, and a $50000 reward has been set up for information that leads to the recovery of Tabitha and the prosecution of those involved in her disappearance. If you have any information that could help, please submit a tip here.

The Disappearance of LaQuanta Riley

LaQuanta Riley has been missing since December 7th, 2003. The then-18-year-old was last seen by her family at their Montgomery, Alabama home. LaQuanta’s last encounter with her family was very brief; she arrived at the family’s home around 11:30 PM to get a jacket, then left shortly afterwards.

During the short amount of time that LaQuanta was inside the house, her brother noticed that she had been driven there by a person in a dark green car that he did not recognize. When he asked her who the driver of the car was, LaQuanta simply replied that the driver was her friend. After retrieving her jacket, LaQuanta returned to the dark green car and was driven away. Her family has never seen her again.

About a week later, LaQuanta’s mother received a voicemail that she believes was from her missing daughter. The message was not clear, but it sounded as if the caller said either “leave me alone,” or “let me go home.” Also in the voicemail, a man’s voice is heard in the background saying LaQuanta’s name. The call disconnected after that. To this day, that call has still never been traced.

There have been very few leads in LaQuanta’s case. The driver of the dark green car that LaQuanta was picked up in is still unidentified. The car is being described as a four-door sedan, possibly a Ford Taurus or a Chevrolet Caprice. Police are looking to identify that driver. Police are also still looking for leads in LaQuanta’s case—there is an $11,000 reward in place for information about her whereabouts. If you have any information, please contact the Montgomery police department at 334-241-2350.

The Disappearance of Monica Carrasco

Monica Carrasco has been missing since October 2nd, 2003. She was only 16 years-old when she vanished, however she had already faced quite a few hardships in her short life. Three years before her disappearance, Monica's father died of bone cancer. Monica grew quite depressed after that, and she eventually developed anorexia nervosa and had to be hospitalized after she lost over 50 pounds. Upon her release from the hospital, Monica opted to move in with her aunt and uncle at their home in Balmorhea, Texas--after claiming she was angry with her mother. Monica had been living with her aunt and uncle for quite some time when she went missing. She was last seen by her cousins during the early morning hours of October 2nd. Said cousins saw her go to bed around 11pm the previous evening and they checked on her around 1:30am. However, by 7:30am the following morning, Monica was gone. She has never been seen or heard from again.

Monica's Bible vanished with her. Due to this, it is believed that Monica left the home on her own accord. However, police still feared for her safety. Her aunt and uncle stated that they believe she became disoriented from her medications, left the house, and accepted a ride from a passing motorist. Police have stated that it is possible that Monica left the house to meet up with a person she met from the Internet. Monica's mother, on the other hand, does not believe that Monica ran away. Although Monica and her mother did not live together, her mother stated their problems were not serious and that she would not voluntarily stay out of touch.

None of these theories have been confirmed, and there have not been any persons of interests or suspects in Monica's case. Still, it should be noted that Monica's uncle failed a polygraph exam in relation to her disappearance. He has not been charged with anything related to Monica's disappearance.

Monica remains missing today. The Reeves County Sheriff's Office is investigating. If you have any information that could lead to her whereabouts, please contact authorities at 432-445-4901.
