List Series: Bus Stop Mysteries

The next installment of List Series: A list of six women who vanished while walking to or from a bus stop. Most buses and bus stops are equipped with surveillance cameras, and most areas with bus stops are public areas with numerous witnesses. Due to all this, it is hard for a person to simply vanish without a trace near a bus stop--which is what makes the following cases especially eerie.

6. Lashaya Stine

16 year-old Lashaya Stine was last seen during the early morning hours of July 15th, 2016. She snuck out of her family’s Aurora, Colorado home around 2am to meet with an unspecified individual and never came back. The last known sighting of Lashaya was on a surveillance camera, walking near a bus stop in the 1600 block of north Peoria Street at 2:23 a.m. She has never been heard from again.

Although Lashaya left her house without her mother’s permission, it is believed that she intended to return home before anyone even noticed that she had left. She left behind her clothes, wallet, money, phone charger and other belongings. She also has no history of running away from home or getting into trouble, and she disappeared the day before a job interview.

Lashaya’s family believes that she was forced into sex trafficking. Multiple witnesses have told her family that they’ve seen Lashaya in the Colfax Avenue area of Aurora; an area where prostitution and drugs are quite prevalent. Witnesses have also stated that a girl matching Lashaya’s description was being kept drugged and forced into prostitution. Despite these leads, Lashaya has still not been located and the FBI is actively investigating her case. [read more]

5. Caleta White

Caleta White (18) has been missing since August 22nd, 2005. That afternoon, Caleta left her mother’s home in Auburn, Washington and boarded a Metro Bus to visit her boyfriend in Tukwila. She never arrived at her destination and has never been seen or heard from again. Caleta was reported missing by her family after she missed a doctor’s appointment two days later.

Caleta’s boyfriend has a criminal record and apparently gave inconsistent statements to police about the last time he saw her. Despite this, police are currently not calling him a suspect in her case. However, police do believe that foul play was involved in Caleta’s disappearance. Caleta’s cell phone went inactive the day she vanished, and there has been no activity in her bank account since she vanished as well. It is also uncharacteristic of her to be out of touch with her loved ones.

It has been confirmed that Caleta did, in fact, board the Metro Bus that day; however her boyfriend claimed that Caleta never arrived at his house. It is unclear whether or not police believe his statements. [read more]

4. Ali Lowitzer

Alexandria ‘Ali’ Lowitzer was only 16 years old when she vanished on April 26th, 2010.  She disappeared after school that afternoon, shortly after she exited the school bus around 2:45pm. The bus stop where Ali was dropped off is only a few houses away from her family’s Spring, Texas home, but on that particular day, she did not go straight home after getting off the bus. Instead, Ali called her mother Jo Ann to let her know that she would be walking to her workplace, Burger Barn, to pick up her paycheck. That phone call was the last interaction Jo Ann has had with her daughter—Ali never returned home after that. According to the owner of Burger Barn, Ibrahim Banat, Ali never showed up at the restaurant to pick up her paycheck either. She was subsequently reported missing the next day.

Since Ali’s disappearance, the bus stop and the route to Burger Barn have been thoroughly searched. According to Ali’s mother, those searches did not yield any clues, evidence of foul play or even any of Ali’s personal belongings. Investigators also interviewed Ibrahim and the other employees at Burger Barn, despite the fact that Ibrahim said Ali never showed up that day. Law enforcement has never shared any concerns regarding the restaurant in relation to Ali’s disappearance. What happened to Ali after she exited the school bus that afternoon still remains a mystery. 3. Tabitha Tuders

Tabitha Tuders vanished while en route to her school bus stop on the morning of April 29th, 2003. The 13 year-old was last seen at her family’s Nashville, Tennessee home that morning around 7am, shortly after her father woke her up to get ready for school. Tabitha’s father left for work shortly after he woke her up–Tabitha was watching TV when he left and nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. Just like every other day, Tabitha planned to walk to her bus stop on 14th and Boscobel Street to board the school bus at 8am. A few witnesses saw her walking towards that direction before 8am, but unfortunately Tabitha never made it to the bus stop or to school that day. When she did not return home that afternoon as planned, her parents called the school only to find out that she had not attended her classes at all that day. Tabitha was then reported missing around 6pm that evening.

Due to Tabitha’s age, authorities initially treated her disappearance as a runaway. Her parents have never believed that she left on her own accord; she has no history of running away and she was a straight-A student who took pride in her perfect school attendance record. Additionally, Tabitha left behind all of her personal possessions and money. At this time investigators have changed their tune, and have stated that they now believe Tabitha was abducted. Many leads have been chased over the years, including possible sightings of Tabitha on a prostitution website--however none of those leads have panned out. Tabitha's disappearance remains unsolved today. [read more]

She left his house on foot around 3pm, en route to a nearby bus stop where she planned to catch a bus home. During her walk to the bus stop, Jennifer called her boyfriend and said she’d noticed a car slowly circling the block, and she was frightened. She did not describe the appearance of the vehicle or the driver during that phone call. An hour later, Jennifer’s boyfriend tried calling her back to make sure she made it home. Another woman answered the phone and said she had found the phone on the ground on the street near the bus stop. It was later revealed that Jennifer never got on the bus as planned. She has not been seen or heard from again after that. [read more] [also on the Unsolved Mysteries & Suspicious Phone Calls list]
