Today in True Crime: July 10, 2022

 Today's true crime anniversaries:

1. The disappearance and murder of Breasia Terrell

Today marks two years since Breasia Terrell vanished in Davenport, Illinois. The 10-year-old girl was last seen alive at the home of Henry Dinkins--a registered sex offender. Dinkins is the father of Breasia's half-brother, and the two children had spent the afternoon of July 9th at Dinkins' residence. Breasia later called her mother to ask if she could spend the night at Dinkins' house, to which Breasia's mother said yes. Although Breasia's mother knew Dinkins was a registered sex offender, she thought that her daughter would be safe at his residence since she was with her brother.

Unfortunately, Breasia's mother was wrong. Breasia never returned from Dinkins house and was never seen alive again. Dinkins was inevitably named a suspect in the case, but he denied any knowledge of Breasia's whereabouts. In April 2021, Breasia's remains were found in a pond in DeWitt by a group of fishermen. Her death was labeled a homicide. The following month, Dinkins was charged with Breasia's kidnapping and murder. The case is currently ongoing.

2. The disappearance of Natoya Stephens

Today is also the 10-year anniversary of the disappearance of Natoya Stephens. Natoya was 29 years old when she vanished in Brooklyn, New York. Certain reports state that she left her residence on Leffert Avenue after a fight with her fiancĂ©. Natoya has never been seen or heard from again.

Natoya's fiancĂ© has never been publicly named as a suspect, although he is the last person believed to have seen her. No other suspects have been publicly named either. Natoya's loved ones unfortunately still do not have any answers in the case. Very few updates are available.

The Murder of Brittany Stykes

The evening of August 28th, 2013 was supposed to be a celebratory evening for the family of Brittany Stykes. The 22-year-old woman was due to join her family at their farm in Ripley, Ohio, to celebrate her father's birthday. In the early evening, Brittany and her 14-month-old daughter, Aubree, got into her husband's Jeep to drive to the party. Unfortunately, neither Brittany nor Aubree would make it to their destination that night.

Shortly before 7:00 PM, a couple driving on Ohio Route 68 saw a Jeep pulled over on the side of the road. When the couple pulled over to inspect the scene, they spotted something horrific. The young woman driving the car, who was later identified as Brittany, had been shot several times. Brittany's infant daughter, Aubree, had also been shot in the head. The frightened couple immediately called Brown County Police to report this gruesome discovery.

Authorities rushed to the area, where they found both Brittany and Aubree suffering from gunshot wounds. Miraculously, Aubree was still alive. She was immediately rushed to the hospital. Tragically, it was too late for Brittany. The young woman, who had suffered gunshot wounds to the arm, neck, and chest, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Brittany and Aubree were shot in an area located just 3 miles from Brittany's parents' house. Her parents heard the ambulance and police sirens rushing to the scene. Brittany's brother, who was on his way to the party, also noticed the ambulance and police presence on route 68 - so he called his parents to let them know about it. This immediately worried their parents, as they knew Brittany would be taking that route to their house. Brittany's father decided to go to the scene to see it for himself. He was stopped by police, who told him that a young woman and her baby had been shot. Brittany's father immediately knew the victims were his daughter and granddaughter.

Little Aubree underwent four brain surgeries due to her gunshot wound to the head. She fortunately received proper care and recovered from her injuries. Still, now Aubree was left without her mother. The rest of Brittany's loved ones were also left to deal with their loss. They were also left with several questions - the main questions being: who killed Brittany? Will her killer ever be brought to justice?

-

About Brittany.

While investigating any murder, it is important for detectives to look into the victim's life. Learning about a victim's day-to-day life and the events leading up to their murder can help detectives establish potential suspects, motives, and theories. When detectives looked into Brittany's life, they learned that she was a fairly typical young woman who loved spending time with her family.

Brittany grew up on her family's farm in Ohio. Brittany loved the farm and would often spend time there with her family - even after she moved out. She enjoyed working on cars with her father, and she also loved interacting with the animals.

At the time of her death, Brittany was living in her own nearby home with her husband, Shane Stykes, and their daughter Aubree. She was also four months pregnant with her second child. Brittany loved being a mother and was looking forward to having another baby. By all accounts, Brittany seemed like a family-oriented young woman who did not have any known enemies.

Shane and Brittany with their daughter.

Brittany's husband.

Brittany's husband, Shane, said he was initially confused when the police showed up at his house on the evening of his wife's murder. He said that he believed Brittany and Aubree were at Brittany's parent's house; he had no clue why the police were at his door at 11:30 PM. However, once police asked him if he was the owner of a yellow Jeep, he immediately knew something was wrong. Brittany had left the house in that Jeep.

Stykes' Jeep

Police inevitably looked into Shane as a suspect. Several other people reportedly felt he was involved as well. Shane is 16 years older than Brittany - making him 38 years-old at the time Brittany was killed, while Brittany was only 22. Such an age gap can often raise red flags. Shane also did not accompany Brittany to the party that evening, leaving some to question if Shane did not get along with Brittany's family. This question became even more prominent when Brittany's parents filed a lawsuit against Shane in December 2013. The lawsuit claimed that Shane was keeping Aubree from them. The lawsuit was short-lived, though, as Brittany's parents dropped it about a month later.

When questioned by police, Shane told them that he was at a gym at the time Brittany and Aubree were struck by gunfire. Said gym is located an approximate 15-minute drive away from the spot where the shooting occurred. Shane was given a polygraph exam, which he passed. Additionally, police were able to confirm his alibi. Overall, Shane cooperated with the investigation and was eventually cleared as a suspect.

In 2014, Shane told reporters that he knew who killed Brittany. He explained that he had known from the beginning, and he had been "pointing [police] in the right direction from the moment they took him in for questioning." Shane did not publicly identify his suspect in question. He merely said, "it's someone he knows - just not on a personal level."

However, in the same report, Shane also expressed fear that investigators would not solve the case. Even though he had told police exactly what he believes happened, an arrest had still not been made. The report then quotes the police, who disagreed with Shane's assessment of the investigation. They said that they had been working on a prominent theory that they believed would help solve Brittany's murder. Still, police did not elaborate on this theory.

The informant.

In 2015, police revealed that an informant had come forward with information about Brittany's case. The informant was a young woman who said she witnessed the shooting of Brittany. The woman told police that on August 28th, 2013, she was riding in the passenger side of a car belonging to her ex-boyfriend, Tommy Lopez. The couple were at a gas station when they saw Brittany drive past in the yellow Jeep.

Reported surveillance footage of the Jeep (source:browncountycrime.com)

The woman went on to explain that Lopez began following Brittany in his car. She said that Lopez drove behind Brittany for about 25 minutes before the couple plugged in a portable police blue light and turned on the sirens. Brittany, believing that she was being stopped by a police officer, pulled over near Gooselick Road.

The informant said that she stayed in Lopez's car while Lopez exited the vehicle and approached the Jeep. She explained that she watched as Lopez fired four shots at Brittany's vehicle. He then returned to his own car, and they fled from the scene.

When investigators asked about Lopez's motive, the informant explained that Lopez was a hitman who had been hired to kill Brittany. She explained that Lopez had accepted two payments of $10,000 for this particular hit. The motive, according to the informant, was payback against Brittany's husband Shane. The person who hired Lopez allegedly wanted to get revenge on Shane for not paying drug money that he owed.

At the time the informant came forward in 2015, Lopez was incarcerated in Kentucky on unrelated drug charges. The woman said she was too afraid to come forward prior to Lopez's arrest. Once he was behind bars, she finally decided to speak to police.

Tommy Lopez

The woman implicated Lopez in not only Brittany's murder, but also two other murders as well. One of the victims was a man who had allegedly sold drugs to an ex-girlfriend of Lopez - who subsequently died of an overdose. The other victim that the informant named was 18-year-old Michaela BrIede, who was killed in her Fort Mitchell, Kentucky home. The informant claimed that Lopez's motive for that murder was robbery.

Investigating Lopez.

Initially, it appeared that investigators had reasons to believe the informant's story. There was reported surveillance footage of the yellow Jeep that Brittany was driving passing a gas station on the night of the murder. The informant's version of events also seemed to support the evidence that Brittany was the only person who actually got shot. The forensic evidence shows that Aubree was struck in the head by a bullet that had traveled through Brittany's chest. This reveals that the four shots that the informant saw being fired were all aimed at Brittany.

However, there were reasons to doubt the informant's version of events as well. She said that Brittany was killed over a drug debt that her husband Shane owed - but Shane denied being involved with drugs. Just days after Brittany's murder, Shane also told reporters that he was shocked that such a gruesome crime occurred in Ripley. He said that they lived in Ripley to avoid crime. Shane is quoted explaining, "I don't want to be around the drug scene. All my neighbors are very friendly. We're all very close. That's why I don't get this."

Police revealed the informant's account in September 2015. During the months that followed, there were some discrepancies in reports about Lopez's potential involvement in Brittany's murder. In November of 2015, a site called the Brown County Crime Reporter reported that a grand jury was deliberating on whether or not to indict Tommy Lopez for the murder of Brittany Stykes. However, it appears that no other sources posted on these alleged deliberations. The Brown County Crime Reporter also never posted any follow-up on the subject of Brittany's murder.

No charges filed.

About a month and a half later, in January 2016, the News Democrat reported that Lopez was released from police custody the day after Christmas 2015. The report quoted assistant prosecutor Zac Corbin, who said that Lopez had not yet been cleared of suspicion in Brittany's case, but he also was not yet labeled as a suspect. Corbin also directly contradicted the report from Brown County Crime Reporter, as he stated that they did not yet have enough evidence to utilize a Grand Jury. Corbin explained, "It does us no good for us to run something through a Grand Jury and try to get an indictment when we can’t ultimately go into court and prove beyond a reasonable doubt."

As previously stated, Lopez was incarcerated at the time the Brown County Crime Reporter article was published, but for drug charges that were unrelated to Brittany's case. While Lopez was behind bars, police began to investigate his potential involvement in Brittany's murder. It's possible that the Brown County Crime Reporter was simply confused about Lopez's charges at that time, but it's clear that he has never been charged with anything related to Brittany's case.

Some still suspect that Lopez was involved in Brittany's death, but it appears that these suspicions have dwindled in more recent years. In 2018, Shane Stykes spoke to reporters again, saying that he did not believe that Brittany was pulled over when she was shot.  Shane said that, if Brittany had gotten pulled over, the car would have been at a dead stop and there would not have been any damage to the vehicle. However, the car was damaged in the incident. The front differential of the car had damage consistent with impact.

Shane then explained that he believed someone had "paced alongside" Brittany in the car and then fired at her. After Brittany was shot, Shane believes that the car then veered into the embankment, causing the vehicular damage. This belief of Shane's once again contradicts the informant's story that Lopez shot Brittany after pulling her over.

Where the case stands today.

As of 2022, Brittany's murder still remains unsolved. More recent reports have stated that the informant's story was dismissed, but it's unclear if police have officially cleared Lopez as a suspect. Although Shane Stykes said he had been cleared of suspicion, he still feels that people treat him as a suspect. He said that Brittany's parents have pointed the finger at him, and his relationship with them has completely soured.

There are other people who also still suspect that Shane is responsible Brittany's death. He has since remarried and still continues to deny being involved in Brittany's murder. Early on into the investigation, Shane said he knew who killed Brittany, but the identity of said person has never been revealed. It's unclear if police consider this elusive person to be a person of interest or not.

There is a monetary reward available for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of Brittany's killer. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please contact investigators via email at qcarlson@bcoso.us or by calling 937-378-4435.

The Murder of Chandra Powell

(source)

Chandra Powell was murdered inside her home in front of two of her young children during October 2010. The 35-year-old woman had recently moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee before her untimely death. Chandra reportedly moved to Chattanooga to start a new chapter in her life with her five children. Within months of moving there, she was killed. An autopsy revealed that she had been brutally beaten and stabbed to death.

On the afternoon of October 27th, 2010, three of Chandra's children - an 11-year-old son and 15- and 16-year-old daughters - arrived home from school and stumbled upon a horrific scene. Their mother was dead on the living room floor, and it was clear that a violent altercation had occurred. Chandra's two-year-old child was found unharmed beside Chandra's body. Chandra's other child - a 16-day-old infant - was found asleep in a crib.

Chandra was in a relationship with a man named Brad Stewart at the time of her death. According to Brad, Chandra followed him to Chattanooga from Indiana. Previously, Chandra was married to a man named Steven Powell. That marriage fell apart after Steven was arrested for child molestation in 2007. Steven was convicted by a jury in 2008 and was in prison when Chandra was killed. Chandra also had children by two other fathers. The father of her youngest child was also incarcerated at the time Chandra was killed.

Brad Stewart gained custody of Chandra's five children for a brief period of time following Chandra's death. The baby was removed from his custody just three weeks later. About a month later, the other children were removed from his custody as well. Brad is quoted in an article from 2011, stating that he was given very little information as to why the children were taken from him. Court records show that Brad, too, was charged with child molestation in 2008, but he was acquitted of those charges in 2009.

Brad said that he was also looked into as a possible suspect but was eventually cleared after his alibi held up. It appears that police have interviewed other potential persons of interest, but to this day nobody has been publicly named as a suspect. Over a decade has passed since Chandra's death, and police have barely released any news about the investigation.

The Chattanooga Police are in charge of Chandra's case. If you have any information that could help find her killer, please submit a tip.

The Murder of Kendra Dobyns

During the early-morning hours of June 1st, 2012, the New Castle County Police received a call about a young woman lying on the side of the road on Pyles Lane. When first responders arrived on the scene, they found the body of 19-year-old Kendra Dobyns. She had been shot multiple times.

Kendra is originally from Elkton, Delaware. She was four months pregnant at the time of her death. When the news about Kendra's murder first broke, the reports stated that detectives were conducting interviews and attempting to retrace Kendra's steps on the night of her death. Since then, police have not released any further updates in the case.

While police have remained quiet about the investigation, Kendra's friends have been very open on social media about who they think killed her. Several people have posted on Facebook that they believe the father of Kendra's unborn child is responsible for her death. Many have also placed blame upon police in Delaware for their lack of action in the case.

-

In 2018, a Facebook page called Cold Case NCCPD shared a post about Kendra's case. One person commented on the post, "Someone had to of seen her in that area. Who was she pregnant by and who did she hang with??"

In response, one if Kendra's friends replied the following:

This friend is just one of several people on this Facebook thread that speculate about the father of the unborn child being Kendra's killer. Kendra's sister also commented on the thread stating that the man in question was questioned and let go. However, the sister still believes that he was involved in Kendra's death. She commented:

Other people commented stating that they believed the father of Kendra's child set Kendra up. Some people speculate that he hired or bribed someone into killing Kendra, while others believe the man himself is the one that killed her. Either way, the general consensus on the Facebook thread is that the father of Kendra's child is, at the very least, involved in her murder.

The friend who commented on the thread also stated that she believes several people are aware that the baby's father killed Kendra, but nobody is speaking up. She posted:

This friend also stated that she has told the police everything she knows about what she thinks happened to Kendra, but the police have failed to act. Many other people commented in the thread, expressing that both the police system AND the justice system in Delaware are very flawed. It appears that Kendra's murder is part of an even larger problem involving unsolved violent crime in the state of Delaware. Here are just some of the few posts on the Facebook thread that indicate this serious issue:

Post from Kendra's sister

It is worth noting that none of the things stated in these Facebook posts have been confirmed, however it appears that many citizens of the state of Delaware feel that the police do not help protect or bring justice to the people.

The murder of Kendra Dobyns remains unsolved today. If you have any information that could help convict her killer, please submit a tip.

The Murder of Julia Niswender

Julia Niswender was a young student with her whole life ahead of her when her life was tragically cut short in December 2012. The then-23-year-old was a student at Eastern Michigan University, where she was studying communications. At the time of her death, Julia lived with a roommate in an off-campus apartment in Ypsilanti. It was inside this apartment that Julia was brutally murdered.

Julia's roommate was reportedly not present at the time Julia was killed. The two were keeping in touch via text, but at some point, Julia stopped replying. She also abruptly stopped communicating with her other friends and family members. Julia's loved ones began to have serious concerns when they learned that she had not shown up to a friend's Christmas party, nor had she shown up to work. Police were subsequently asked to perform a welfare check at Julia's apartment on December 11th, 2012.

When authorities entered the apartment, they found the residence in disarray. Inside the bathroom, officers stumbled upon a tragic scene: Julia was dead. She was found face down in the bathtub. Her clothes had been cut off, and her phone was found beneath her body. Julia also had ligature marks on her wrists, suggesting she had been tied up at some point before her death.

Julia's death was quickly classified as a murder. An autopsy declared that her death was caused by asphyxiation due to drowning, but authorities maintain that she was deprived of oxygen prior to being put in the bathtub. DNA was collected from the murder scene, which was matched to two different males. Investigators also found seminal fluid on Julia's body, which was linked to a male who had gotten a vasectomy.

Julia's stepfather, James Turnquist, was labeled a person of interest early on into the investigation. Turnquist had undergone a vasectomy procedure, so there was speculation that the seminal fluid found on Julia's body belonged to him. Additionally, a friend of Julia's told police that Turnquist had sexually abused Julia during her childhood. Oddly enough, said friend would later deny making such claims.

At some point throughout the investigation, Turnquist was arrested on charges of child pornography. However, those charges were later dropped. Turnquist reportedly underwent two polygraph examinations while being questioned about Julia's case, and he passed both times. The DNA found on Julia's murder scene was compared to Turnquist's DNA, but the results were inconclusive. One DNA sample was too weak to make a match, and the other sample was not matched to Turnquist. While many still suspect Turnquist is responsible for Julia's death, he has never been labeled as a suspect by authorities.

As of today, Julia's case remains unsolved. No suspects have ever been publicly named. Julia's loved ones are still dedicated to finding justice, and they hope to see her killer(s) get convicted. If you have any information that could lead to the arrest in Julia's case, please contact the Ypsilanti Police Department at (734) 483-9510.

The disappearance and murder of Krishonda Townsend

It's been 12 years since Krishonda 'Shonda' Townsend vanished in Mineral Wells, Texas. The then-19-year-old disappeared after attending a 4th of July celebration. Shonda drove a friend home from the gathering and then sent her mother a text around 12:10 AM, stating she was on her way home. Unfortunately, she never made it to her home in Perrin, Texas and was never seen or heard from again.

Over a year later, in October 2011, Shonda's skeletal remains were found in the southwest part of Mineral Wells. A man was walking along a fence line on a property for sale on Sand Hill Road when he spotted a human skull. Dental records would later confirm that the skull belonged to Shonda Townsend. Due to the decomposition of her remains, authorities were never able to establish a cause of death. However, they are investigating Shonda's death as a homicide. Over a decade has passed, but Shonda's murder remains unsolved. Very few updates have been publicly announced.

The Disappearances of Amber Aiaz and Melissa Fu

Amber Aiaz and her daughter Melissa Fu have been missing since November 2019. Amber and Melissa resided in Irvine, California at the time of their disappearances. The two lived in an apartment with Amber's husband, Cheng Zhang.

Amber, who was 34 years-old when she vanished, had her own seafood grocery business with locations in both Irvine and Las Vegas, Nevada. Melissa, who was only 12 years-old at the time, was a seventh grader at a local school. Amber's husband Cheng Zhang worked as an Uber driver. The three seemed to live a fairly normal and quiet life - neighbors, friends, and family members all stated that they never noticed anything unusual happening with any of them.

On November 22nd, 2019, Amber took a day trip to Las Vegas to transport fresh groceries to her business in Irvine. Melissa stayed home with Zhang. According to Zhang, he heard a knock on their door around 4:30 PM. When he opened the door, he was greeted by a man and a woman that he did not recognize. Zhang then said that he felt something "misty" on his face that caused him to collapse and fall unconscious. When he awoke later, Melissa was gone -and there were bloodstains on the carpet and in the kitchen. Zhang also found a handwritten note with a message written in Chinese. The message stated that Amber and Melissa were okay and would be returned in a few days as long as Zhang did not call police. The note also instructed Zhang to clean up the apartment to hide any evidence that a crime and/or kidnapping took place.

Shortly after discovering the note, Zhang said he noticed that Amber's van was parked in its normal spot, and it was full of fresh groceries. By Zhang's account, this indicates that Amber made it back from Vegas and was kidnapped, along with Melissa, very shortly thereafter. Zhang then went on to follow the kidnapper's instructions, per the note. He cleaned up the bloodstains from the apartment, replaced the carpet, and painted over the blood on the walls. Zhang called Melissa's school and said she would be kept home for a few days because she was sick. He also used Amber's phone to impersonate her while communicating with her loved ones.

Zhang said he continued to receive notes at their apartment over the next few days. Each note said that Amber and Melissa were fine, and he should continue to behave as if nothing is wrong. Five days after the alleged kidnapping, Zhang said he received another note instructing him to leave town for two days. He subsequently traveled to Las Vegas to stay with family members. When he returned two days later, Zhang received one final note instructing him to clean the apartment again, and that Amber and Melissa would be returned in a few days.

Zhang once again followed the note's instructions - but Amber and Melissa never returned. He also never received another note. After this, Zhang finally decided to contact police to report the kidnapping of his wife and stepdaughter.

Police obviously questioned Zhang's story from the start. Irvine is considered a very safe place to live, and very few kidnappings are ever reported in the area. Additionally, there are many aspects of Zhang's version of events that seem far-fetched. However, as police continued to investigate, they found reason to believe that Zhang might actually be telling the truth.

-

From early December 2019 to mid-January 2020, investigators put Cheng Zhang on 24-hour surveillance. Detectives watched his every move to see if he would do something that might incriminate him in the disappearances of Amber and Melissa. Detectives thought that if Zhang had killed them, maybe he would return to the place where he hid their bodies. Maybe detectives would catch him talking on the phone to a co-conspirator.

However, no such things happened. According to detectives, Zhang did not do anything suspicious while he was under surveillance. In fact, Zhang was actually incredibly cooperative with the investigation and attempted to be helpful. He reportedly led detectives to evidence that he destroyed while cleaning the apartment. With Zhang's help, detectives were able to find traces of blood in the residence. Forensic testing later revealed that the blood belonged to Amber Aiaz.

On January 15th, 2020, Zhang voluntarily went to the police station, where he was interrogated thoroughly for hours. A behavioral analyst from the FBI studied him during his interrogation. Without prior notice, investigators asked Zhang to take a polygraph. He agreed, and he passed. The polygraph examiner reportedly did not find any signs of deception. It was at this point that the detectives working the case began to think that Cheng Zhang might not be the culprit after all.

From that point forward, investigators began to ponder other theories about what might have happened to Amber and Melissa. In order to do this, they needed to take a look at Amber's background, her relationships, and other aspects of her life to help establish new theories.

Background.

Dalian, China. source:agoda.com

Amber Aiaz is originally from Dalian, China. She moved to the United States in 2005. Amber resided in Chicago, and she got married very shortly after moving there. In 2007, Amber gave birth to her daughter, Melissa. Unfortunately, Amber's husband/Melissa's father died of cancer a short time later. Amber then moved back to China to try and raise Melissa there, but their stay was brief. The mother and daughter eventually returned to the United States, where they settled in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While in Vegas, Amber began her seafood grocery business. She eventually established a large client base and had many loyal customers. Amber used a Chinese-based app called WeChat to sell her goods and to interact with her customers. When Amber and Melissa moved to Irvine with Zhang, Amber expanded her business there as well. After their move, she made several trips to the Las Vegas location to transport fresh groceries back to Irvine.

Relationship with Cheng Zhang.

Amber began her relationship with Zhang during 2017. They briefly split up in 2018 after Amber reportedly had a relationship with another man in China. However, Amber and Zhang reconciled their relationship at some point later in 2018. Shortly thereafter, Zhang, Amber, and Melissa moved to Irvine, California. The three of them resided in an apartment on Michelson and University Street.

The Irvine apartment complex. (source: LA Times)

Reports state that Zhang was typically "non-assertive" in their relationship. According to a report from the LA Times, Zhang "avoided conflict and typically acquiesced to his wife." Although Amber had been unfaithful in the past, it did not appear that there were any serious issues in their relationship at the time of her disappearance.

While investigating Amber and Melissa's disappearance, police discovered that Amber had been dishonest with Zhang about her finances. In fact, Amber actually had very little money at the time she vanished. When police shared this information with Zhang, he reacted with disbelief. Amber had reportedly convinced Zhang that she had millions of dollars in investments and several hundred thousand dollars in cash.

When Zhang reported the kidnapping of Amber and Melissa, police had good reason to question his story. His version of events sounds more like a plot from a movie than it does an actual kidnapping. However, after several hours of surveillance, interrogation, and a polygraph, detectives could not tie Zhang to the disappearances. Police stated that, if Zhang had lied, his story "had been so flawlessly memorized that it would have challenged the memory of a professional actor, much less a seemingly simple man."

Discrepancies about money.

Cheng Zhang was apparently not the only person who Amber had lied to about money. A detective working the case is quoted in the LA Times report, saying "Amber told everybody in her life that she had money." While Zhang was completely unaware that this was untrue, others had noticed discrepancies in Amber's discussions about finances.

The LA Times article states "interviews suggested that [Amber] had angered people who felt she had swindled them. Some had even made threats." The article does not further elaborate on these threats, though, so it is unclear if anyone had threatened Amber around the time she and Melissa vanished.

Theories.

Police believe it is possible that Amber and Melissa's kidnappings might be related to a person that Amber dated in Las Vegas or China. However, none of these men have been publicly identified and it is unclear if police have thoroughly interviewed any of her exes.

It is also possible that the kidnappers took Amber and Melissa under the expectation that Amber would give them money. Police think it's possible that they came to harm after Amber was unable to actually provide the money because she did not actually have said money.

Many also still believe that Cheng Zhang is responsible for the disappearance of Amber and Melissa. His story is incredibly unusual, and it's possible that he fabricated the entire story. Still, his story has held up against polygraphs, FBI analysts, and intense interrogations.

Tips.

When the LA Times article came out in 2021, it was reported that investigators had only received four tips in the case - an astonishingly small amount. The FBI is now involved in the case. If you have any information that could lead to the whereabouts of Amber Aiaz and/or Melissa Fu, please submit a tip.
