The Murder of Danielle Oliverio

 

On the evening of January 29th, 2007, authorities in Wilmington, Massachusetts responded to a brush fire in a secluded wooded area off of Ballardvale Street. As firefighters began working to extinguish the fire, they discovered something unexpected amongst the flames: the body of a young woman. That woman was soon identified as Danielle Oliverio, a 25-year-old resident of Quincy, Massachusetts.

An autopsy later revealed that Danielle had been brutally beaten, strangled, and set on fire. Investigators believe that Danielle may have possibly still been alive when her assailant(s) lit the fire, as the death certificate notes that there was smoke found in her lungs. It's clear that Danielle was brutally killed, but her killer(s) still remain unknown to this day.

There is very little information available about the events leading up to Danielle's death. What is known is that she was last seen alive in Chelsea. There are no publicly available records about who saw her last, or what happened in between the time she was last seen alive and when she was found deceased in Wilmington. 

Danielle's case has some similarities to other unsolved murder cases in Massachusetts, which has caused speculation about whether or not there is/was a serial killer in the area. One such case is the murder of Brandi Sullivan. Reports note that 17-year-old Brandi was found murdered on August 7th, 1996. Her body was found in a wooded area behind a warehouse on Ballardvale Street - the same street where Danielle's body would be found over a decade later. There is a person of interest in Brandi's killing who was eventually convicted of perjury related to her case; however, he has never been charged with murder.

In 2002, the body of 25-year-old Melissa Doherty was found in Andover, Massachusetts. The young woman's body was found wrapped up in a rug in a wooded area. Much like Danielle's case, Melissa was also set on fire. Additionally, police believe that Melissa's killer(s) transported her through the Chelsea/East Boston area before ultimately leaving her body in Andover. 

After Danielle was found murdered in 2007, the speculation began about her case potentially being linked to Brandi's case and Melissa's case. Approximately nine years later, in 2016, 27-year-old Vanessa Marcotte was brutally attacked and murdered while jogging in the Princeton area. Similar to Melissa Doherty and Danielle Oliverio, Vanessa's body was also set on fire. 

DNA linked Vanessa's murder to a man named Angelo Colon-Ortiz - a local delivery driver. Colon-Ortiz was arrested in April 2017. Years later, he pleaded guilty to second degree murder and unarmed robbery. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Despite the similarities, investigators have never been able to link Colon-Ortiz to Danielle's case. He also has not been definitively linked to Brandi Sullivan or Melissa Doherty. All 3 cases remain unsolved to this day.

Danielle's murder has inevitably been a devastating loss for her family and friends. Danielle had a son who was still a young child at the time of his mother's death. No persons of interest or suspects have ever been publicly named in the case. All of Danielle's loved ones are still left without answers or justice.
