The Murder of Kaylynn Voegele

Kaylynn Voegele (17) was tragically murdered by her boyfriend Gianni Cunningham (17) on May 4th, 2016.

On that evening, Gianni fatally shot Kaylynn in the face at his apartment complex in Burien, Washington. Afterwards, he attempted to cover his tracks by removing a shell casing from the site and firing more gunshots at the doors to frame it as a drive-by. When the police arrived on the scene, Gianni told them that Kaylynn was shot by a man driving a BMW as she opened the door to the outside of the apartment building.

Gianni’s story quickly began to unravel once police interviewed a male resident who had witnessed the entire event. The resident told police that he was getting ready for bed when he heard voices outside of his apartment around 11pm. He looked through his peephole and saw the two teens talking. He was about to tell them to quiet down, when he saw Gianni playing with a gun. The resident heard Kaylynn ask Gianni to put the gun away multiple times, and at one point, he heard her tell Gianni, “I’m not afraid of you.” Shortly after that, the resident watched as Gianni pulled the gun out of his waistband, pointed it at Kaylynn’s face, and pulled the trigger.

After this revelation, Gianni was then arrested on the scene and charged as an adult for the murder of Kaylynn. Prior to the murder, Gianni had already been on juvenile probation for carrying a loaded .45 semiautomatic handgun on the Rainier Beach High School campus in February of 2016. Now, in addition to the murder charges, Gianni has also been charged as an adult with unlawful possession of a firearm.
