Before leaving home, Arefat reportedly said he was headed to West Virginia. However, his phone last pinged in New Market, Virginia. Arefat's car was later found parked on the side of the road on Old Valley Pike in Mount Jackson, Virginia. Said area is in the Shenandoah Valley, located over 100 miles away from Arefat's home in Arlington. Police in Shenandoah County subsequently contacted the Arlington County Police to notify them about the discovery of Arefat's vehicle. When officers later returned to that spot, the car was gone.
According to family members, Arefat had no known connections to the Shenandoah Valley area. It is unknown why he would have traveled to that location. It's also unknown if Arefat himself is the one who drove his car away from Old Valley Pike. The car was later found abandoned a second time at Elizabeth Furnace Park in Edinburg, Virginia on August 16th, 2022.
Investigators reportedly did not find any signs of foul play in or around the vehicle. The car did not otherwise yield any information about Arefat's whereabouts. Since then, it appears that no other signs of Arefat have been found.
Despite Arefat's vehicle being found in Shenandoah County, the Arlington County Police are in charge of investigating his disappearance. Both detectives and Arefat's loved ones are hoping to receive tips in the case. If you have information that could help the investigation, please contact the Arlington County Police Department at 703-558-2222.
