The Suspicious Death of Mai Ker Thao

On October 19th, 2016, police in Sacramento, California were alerted after a transient woman was seen walking along Connie Drive while carrying a human skull on a stick. After police confronted the woman, she led them to an abandoned homeless camp on Crosby Way. There, police found additional human remains that matched the skull. After crime scene investigators scoured the area, detectives began working to identify the remains.

It took nearly two years, but in August 2018, the remains were positively identified as 26-year-old Mai Ker Thao. While her exact cause of death has not been revealed, it appears her case is being investigated as a homicide. Around the time Mai Ker's remains were identified, various reports were published that stated investigators were still trying to piece together the events that led to her death. Sacramento Police Detective Scot Krutz is quoted saying, "we’re trying to find out what she was doing and who she was with the last week of her life, and that’s our missing place in her timeline."

According to family members, Mai Ker was struggling prior to her death. Mai Ker's sister said that she changed after suffering a miscarriage. After that, Mai Ker began to distance herself from her family. Mai Ker's family members now are hoping that detectives will find answers as to what happened.

In 2018, detectives also stated that they were looking into the transient woman who was seen carrying Mai Ker's skull as a person of interest. It's unclear if the woman is still being investigated at this point. Mai Ker's case remains unsolved.
